I'm looking to get a cheap portable that can handle mp3s and display the tags. I know that at the price level I'm looking at I can't get any with digital line out (I want to use a portable DAC). I found two players that I can get for the same price: iRiver iMP-50 and iRock Bling. I'm curious if any one has experience with any of these, and most importantly, if it's not too hard to take apart and get a digital signal out of them to feed into a DAC.

i think your best bet is just to select one of many DIY players out on the net and upgrade the design of the DAC
there are several on this site http://www.mp3projects.com/ they are relatively simple and a few have PCBs available. |
