The dac chip in the 7700 is a Sony badged PCM1716 using the EIAJ format, right alligned 20 bits, WCK= 48MCK.

The 7000 has a proprietary Sony filter and pulse dac, but for cd only the easiest way to obtain the non oversampled EIAJ signal is directly from the pins of the CDX 2545 decoder. After that ist is mixed together with the mpeg decompression and hard to get back in any meaningful form.

Sorry for the typo:

EIAJ format, right alligned 24 bits, WCK= 48BCK.

The easiest way to build no oversampling dac player based on the 7000 or 7700 is a pair of AD1651 and an inverter.
To have i2s you have to delay WCK by one BCK.

Will, Smiffy, finally I had the time to open the 7000 (got it from eBay as well) and took a detailed look at the parts inside.

Now I know why both 7000 and 7700 can make a great transport. The clock section is really well done; however, the power fed to it is definitely a weak point. The clock signal wire from the clock section to the DAC section leaves something to be desired, too.

The CD/DVD drive is great. Yet I was surprised to see the flimsy metal cover. Definitely I will put some damping material on it. The machine chassis is a bit disappointing, too.

The power to the DAC definitely needs improvement. Probably some shielding is needed for the DAC board. Way too many digital noises around there.

The audio DAC is based on a typical Sony pulse DAC chip. Not much mod can be done there, I can imagine. Looks like the audio output section is the weakest part in 7000. I will be using the 7000 as a transport only. Have to figure out a good way to pull out clean digital signals.

fcserei/ finneybear,

What does the "clock signal wire from the clock section to the DAC section" carries ? Any potential there to tap that signal and feed into a non-os DAC ?

Will, the clock is housed in the little metal box on the main board. At one corner, you can see a grey shielded cable go all the way to the DAC board. This is the clock, I guess? No service manual yet. Just a first peek into the 7000 interior.

The clock on both the 7000 and 7700 is quite complex, several frequencies and plls.

The way to get the EIAJ (or i2s, with a little trick) is to tap the signals at the dac on the 7700 or at the cd decoder chip on the 7000, as I wrote.

Sorry for digging this old post, but may I ask if anyone has the schematics for S7000? I would like to perform some mods on this player as a transport but I have got no clue on what to do.
