Try the pawnshops. Look for old phillips or magnavox units. Some (not all) had dual 16bit DACs in them. I found one this way when I was looking for a 960 to fiddle with. Audio Amateur has a lot of articles on modding in their backissues at You can still purchase them there.

Default Mash

i also have (among others) a player with MN6471 DAC , in a JVC XL311 player. I ll try some mods on it, just for fun: better clock, analog out, maybe reclocking DAC output and using step up transformer; think, its worth some mods;

THanks for the tip. Could you give me any model numbers to look for? I would like to find something with a decent transport and build a complete DAC for it. I think i could learn a lot by doing that. My digital experience is somewhat limited, unfortunately.

Some of the cheaper Philips players are of Korean origin and not easily modded or worth moding.

What about a Pioneer stable plater legato link players, seen them in local cash convertors (second hand stores) for Aust$300.

The PDS702/802 and up put the Digital filter, DACs, opamps and Regulator ICs on a sperate board with a fair bit of room to play with, could be why Tricord and Theta used them.

Marantz CD-94 is a very nice unit. As for SACD mods try that link:
