my Sony SCD-X501 ES (4 years old) used to be a fine machine, but now it has a problem. It takes very long to read the discs, and more and more it ends with "no disc." Laser lens is clean. Sony says, change laser unit (transport and motor included, 180$, "servive assembly DBU-3").
What to do?
Does anyone know the laser pickup type (KSS?)
Does anyone have the service manual?

I own the same model. Thermal stress ages Laser-diodes, even if the player doesn't play music but is only switched on. Is there a difference in reading CDs and SACDs?
Before exchanging the (double-)laser pickup Type DBU-3 you might try to increase the laser power: on the bottom side under the black pick up head you will find two potis, one for each laser system. Mark or memorize the starting position of the cross slots and then turn them clockwise, but be careful, only in very small steps of ca. 30 degree (resp. 1 hour on the imaginated clock) or less. This may help for a while. Unfortunately increased power will further shorten the lifetime of a diode. So switch off the unit everytime you don't use it and be prepared to order the DBU-3 in a not too distant future...

danke fürs antworten. ich war länger nicht mehr auf der seite. das gerät ist seit langer zeit bei einem experten, der das problem genau so beschrieben hat, wie du. er hat den (er sagt: letzten) neuen dbu-3 laser in den usa erstanden, kann ihn aber ohne service manual nicht justieren. kannst du weiterhelfen? mit einem manual?
