I saw & passed over that 608ESD, as my professional opinion is that the mods looks rather scary, ill-conceived & a bit dangerous. There was never any valid reason to replace the stock transformer, and stacked toroidals is a really BAD thing to do, electromagnetically speaking. Also, the very strange choice of two power cords was done with absolutely no protection from the cables scraping against the chassis opening, which is a bit dicey. And the "upgrade work" in the actual circuitry looks like very little was actually done, and was done in a very sloppy manner. And all of those black foam-looking blocks stuck onto the tops of chips and things are absolutely useless crap. The "upgrader" who did this was a hack & total amateur.
I am going on about this, as the 608ESD is, IMO, a superior player to the 707ESD. With proper upgrading, the PCM58 is just a better sounding dac chip than the PCM64, and it really pained me to see one butchered like this. Sorry you stuck yourself with it. |

What sort of mods have you performed on the 608esd? Do you own players with both chips?

I own a 707ESD, 608ESD, 308ESD, and at least one Denon DCD1520, which uses the PCM64's. Haven't yet done passive i/v + discrete output with either chip(will soon on at least a PCM58 player), but I have done "maxed out" upgrading on all of the above w/opamps, on a fair number of players, leading to my feeling that the PCM64 is rather boring sounding compared to the PCM58.
