Onkyo cd player won't respond to remote

I have an Onkyo CS5VL cd/sacd player that won't respond to the remote control unit. It worked intermittingly at first but soon wouldn't respond at all. It is out of the warranty period.

I've replaced the remote with no success so the problem lies in the cd player. Does anyone have any suggestions or is this a simple case of taking it to a repair center.

Do you have equipment (o'scope or perhaps a DVM) to check for an output from the IR receiver module? If it's bad you might be able to replace it. If the problem is further down the line, i.e. inside a chip, you'll probably need a repair center with access to OEM replacement parts.
