First digital recodings where done in 70's by PCM modulation and recorded on video magnetic gear (U-Matic). Since the machines where NTSC standard, audio datarate needed to comply with that and resulted number was 48kHz.
Alesis made in 1991 the first multitrack recorder, the 8-track ADAT on a S-VHS tape. Original was 16 bit (upgraded to 20 bit latter) and 48kHz resulted from NTSC framerate - dual speed added later for 44.1kHz.
