TAS1020B-based Asynchronous USB to I2S/SPDIF converter 24bit/96kHz

I purchased one of the original (prototype?) boards with USB isolator, external clocks, and I2S output. After an extended work travel period, I was finally able to refocus time on getting the TAS board integrated in my system. I utilize a TDA1541 NOS DAC chip. The JarekC board is externally powered by a 3.3V Salas shunt.

I initially had some noise that was due to a faulty ground (my mistake). Once that was fixed, I was prepared to let the board settle in for a few hundred hours. I didn't need to....the sound was immediately wonnderful.

One of my problems with most USB converters is that they sound "thin". There's no "weight" to the music. This doesn't mean that the sound is overly rich or syrupy. The musicans and instruments each occupy their own space in the black background. The upper frequencies are glare free and the bass is outstanding.

I wanted to thank JarekC again for returning my emails and being patient with my many questions. I cannot wait to hear the new version.....

On PCB is a small error in the description of I2S connectors. (corected by label)

Tomorrow I will post information about avaliable versions and costs.

Changes compared to the previous version:
-galvanic isolation on PCB (ADUM3160 + LDO)
-shorter track for Master Clock signal (from XOs to TAS1020B)
-elimination of the multiplexer in the Master Clock signal path
-sampling rate signaling with 4 LEDs (each has its own LED)
-series termination resistors on the I2S bus lines
-22.5792/24.5760MHz generators + LDO can be mounted on the PCB, or connected via connector
-two modes: 16 bit (32bitframe-16bit data) and 24 bit (32 bit frame-24bit data)
(I can make special only 16 bit version 16bit frame-16bit data for old 16bit DACs)
-derived power to the I2S connector, ability to supply DAC
-smaller dimensions, only 67mm x 30mm
-4 mounting holes

At this moment I have only 10 PCBs (3-4 are now reserved).
A I can build two version of USB-I2S converter:

Version A:
- TAS1020B aynchronous mode I2S output 24bit (32/24 frame ) & 16bit (32/16 frame)
- Fs 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz
- MCLK = 256 Fs
- low noise LDOs (2X LP2985)
- USB Connector Type B
- I2S Connector 2x5 Pin (raster 2.54mm) (3.3V HCMOS Levels)
- Low jitter generators 22.5792MHz/24.576MHz
- powered from USB or external supply (jumper)
- control LED + header (1x6Pin ) for Fs LEDs
- native drivers for Windows, MAC OS, Linux (UAC1.0)
- gold plated PCB

Version B:
- Version A + galvanic separation (ADUM3160)
- USB side powered from USB BUS, TAS side powered from external supply

Version A costs 220 PLN (Polish Zloty) its about 68$/52Euro
Version B costs 278 PLN (Polish Zloty) its about 87$/66Euro
Shipping cost is 19 PLN about 6$ (Registered Mail Polish Post)
PapPal Fee is 4%

Hi Jarek

I'm very interested in the SPDIF version.

It should work with a Debian GNU/Linux computer. As far as I understood this is supported but I just want to be sure.

Do you have any idea when you will be able to get the parts?
You mentioned an aluminium case. Where you able to design one?

How about an HDMI version for DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD passthrough?

- connection scheme of external components (correct I2S pinout)
- device scheme for people who want to modify supply or another part of the converter

If anybody interested I still have 2connverters for sale , version A or B.

Hello Jarek,
i have just finished my little DAC project with your USB/I2S converter and it is working very good. I am running a headless Intel D510MO-Board with Voyage MPD. The D/A-Converter is a PCM1794 COD board from twistedpearaudio.com, I/V-conversion is done by 33 Ohm resistors and little transformers from South Korea. I am very satisfied with this solution. First prototypes PCBs (5pcs) in production.

A also ordered next batch (10 pcs) of PCB for USB-I2S converter.
If any one is interested in it will be available in early March.
