Default Sony mini Hi-fi Output has low volume?

I recently aquired from my brother this beautiful sony mini-hi fi (mhc-1600) from the 90's. Everything seems to be working fine except that the output sound is really low. I can only hear music when i turn the volume all the way up. I tried different speakers from 6ohm to 8ohm and it's the same issue with all of them. Almost as if the internal amplifier is not working? can this be fixed? any help on this would be greatly appreciate it.
