DAC kit recommendation

Hi,

I am thinking of making a headphone amplifier with digital inputs. The plan is to buy a DAC-kit (or find the curcuits and etch PCB) without powersupply, and then make a suitable powersupply to power both modules. (Amplifier and DAC)

USB and optical inputs would have been great if this is easy to implement in a good design, but i would prefer through hole mounted components. I am able to etch double sided PCB's, so more layers than that would require ordering this as well.

The DAC does not need a volume control, as the headphone amplifier will control the volume.

Can anyone recommend a good DIY DAC "kit" or circuits that will suit this project? Sound quality is very important and i would put that before types/number of inputs.

I just finished my DAC and USB interface a couple of days ago, and it sounds good. optical is DIR9001 USB is PCM2706 and DAC is pcm1794. Have not built a web for them yet but if you are interested may visit the ebay link PCM1794A 24 Bits HIFI SPDIF+TOSLINK Decoder + USB DAC + Headphone Amplifier | eBay. Some photos there showing the detail of the construction.

By the way, the fiber/usb interface board is an isolated one, sizing around 5cm*5cm, the dac board 180*100cm. For your request redundant modules are there on the DAC board like headphone amplifier and headphone protection circuit.
