DAC/Preamp Ideas

I just finished building an ST-35 from Dynakit. Being that I do not own a turntable and would really like to continue using the iPad/iPod/Computer through the speakers I suppose the next step is to build a DAC/Preamp. Are there any stable, readily available kits with such a purpose?

My budget is in the low hundreds of dollars. College kind of budget.

Or already made DAC/Preamps? It seems the iPod is constantly a source of both praise and disdain as tapping into the digital out and getting analog seems at the least moderately difficult.
