The whole generation of Sony dvd players in that NS range have terribly unreliable lasers and mechanisms. Although it is remotely possible you might cure the fault by finding a service manual and going through the self-calibration procedure in the service menu, it is more likely that the laser is simply dying.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have the service manual but from memory the remote I have is missing one button needed to open the diagnosis/calibration files. Do you think it likely that replacing the laser will CURE the problem or is the machine just not very good at reading hybrid layers?

It's fairly likely that replacing the laser, or, better, the whole laser/tracking drive/platter drive "traverse mech", will cure the problem without further work required, but I have not worked on enough of these to say that with a high degree of confidence.

Yes, I think it's a fair bet so I have ordered a complete platter. Do you think it will need calibration? if so I will have to solve the problem with the missing button on the remote, the manual says_
The Test Mode allows you to make diagnosis and adjustment easily using the remote commander and monitor TV. The instructions, diagnostic results, etc. are given on the on-screen display (OSD). Note: Since the remote commander belongs to this model has no number buttons, use other DVD remote commander with number buttons on it. 6-2. STARTING TEST MODE Press the [TITLE], [CLEAR], [POWER] keys on the remote commander in this order with the power of main unit in OFF status, and the Test Mode starts, then “DIAG START” will be displayed on the fluorescent display tube and the menu shown below will be displayed on the TV screen. At the bottom of menu screen, the model name and revision number are displayed. Last Off at the lower right of screen indicates the information code concerning the last power off. To execute each function, select the desired menu and press its number on the remote commander. To exit from the Test Mode, press the [POWER] key. the remote I have is the original and it does have a numeric pad but does not have a "TITLE" button which I need to enter test mode.microx |

There's a reasonable chance it will work just fine without self-calibration, but, if not, you'll need to buy or borrow another remote. Any Sony dvd remote with the right buttons will work.
