I never tryed a external dac ( i use my Cambridge audio 740CD as dac for PC). So this may sound a very basic question : if i have 2 cd players let´s say a Sony and an Arcam and connect them to a external Dac like Cambridge audio dacmagic , will they sound exactly the same ? or will i be able to tell them apart ?

You probably can. One of the most important analog components in a digital playback system is the reference clock. When drive and DAC are separated by SPDIF, TOSLINK or AES/EBU, the drive is the clock master, and the DAC will have to regenerate it from the data stream. The quality of the clock generator and the output driver will have a lot to say for the regenerated clock in the DAC.
This is probably also the case if the DAC uses asynchronous resampling. Børge |
