Hi all !
I have a project in mind but, unfortunately, i am not an electronician. My project is to be able to play up to 8 wav files (CD quality encoded : 16bits - 44.1KHz), simultaneously and synchronously. Each wav file will have it's own line out. In attachment you will find my functional block diagram. For many weeks now, i am looking for the right components, mainly the processor. By now, i know i have to deal with DSP processors. Could you advice me about the most suitable processor for my project ? Is a dsPIC33 will be suitable ? Globally, any suggestions and advices will be welcome ! Thanks to you ! Regards |

Hi Kris, I think you are probably in the right forum. You are asking a fairly specialised question, it may take some time for the right people to notice

It doesn't look as if the dsPIC would be suitable because, whilst it has a codec interface it has no on-chip USB interface. A better choice would be something that has USB on-board already - the NXP LPC18XX family is sampling now. If you went for this device family the next serious hardware challenge would be handling the codec interface - there are two SSPs on the LPC18XX and if you ran 4 stereo channels over each that might work nicely. Its by no means a trivial task to get the software working for such a device - do you have embedded software experience?

I'm not an expert but I have been researching digital audio interfaces. You can look into miniDSP for an implementation of something similar. They use Analog Devices's Sigma line of DSPs if I'm not mistaken. The AD Blackfin line is probably suitable for your purposes too (8in-8out). Another company who's codec chips are in most sound cards is CMedia.
Streaming 8 channels of audio through USB may prove challenging. Current designs have troubles with 2 channels. |

what? usb having trouble with 2 channels? i have no problem with 8 channels on usb 2.0, maybe its because this is a native audio layer in mac OS? i have to say your post confuses me a little
