I have been told that it will cost £145 to replace the laser drive unit, which upsets me as this product is only three years old and as an OAP not used all that much.
Can anyone tell me if I buy the KSM213ccm how difficult for a novice is it to take the old one out and refit the new one? Do I need a professional or can I diy? Thanks mike |

You can change the assembly yourself , but there are several points you should be aware of:
*Laser diodes are static sensitive, that means you could break them by touching them *many new lasers have two pins shorted on the pickup pcb to prevent damage in transit (this solder bridge must be removed before use) *the laser is very sensitive to power variations, too much power and it will break, but apparently the control is set at the factory. *many cd players have adjustments that require measurement tools (but not your cdp) . Also, if you do attempt to change the mechanism, you should probably be aware that most of the laser light is actually invisible, and it can damage your eyes even if to you it looks less bright than an led. So don't look into it when it's on. |
