Question about CD Laser

Still struggling with Rotel 971. Display now works, but no sound out of both channels. On the other hand the display does register the CD, and reads out as if everything is normal. My first thought was that the laser is gone. (It is old.) But is the laser gone if it can read the tracking information--counting up the time, etc--on the disk as it plays?

As the player plays but no sound, it is not the laser.

I would suspect either the muting circuits or the power supply to the output/dacs.

I'd agree, also make sure that any cables/connector assemblies between boards are plugged in correctly and that the contacts are not oxidized.

Power supply issue or bad muting relay (if present) are also a possibility.
