I am using Phillips DVD player DVP3166, and AVR307 from Harman Kardon.
I have connected then to each other using Coax connection. Now when I play Dolby Digital or MP3 or something that player is able to handle I always miss the mid frequency. And things are bit unclear. But This DVP is can not handle DTS. So when I forcibly play DTS it. The signals are directly processed by Harman kardon. It sounds really nice clean and balanced. Now I am confused if its DTS that’s making difference or the Dolby Decoder in HK is not what it should be, or its DVP 3166 editing it to make it undesirable. The chip that DVP3166 uses is MT1389. So this is what I am not very clear about. Or any way to get Dolby Digital working well for me.

Ho Acosticraft, I would suspect that the HK has got a superior DAC (or possibly output stage) in it. When you play dolby digital or MP3 I suspect the phillips is outputting direct to your amp? and when you play DTS, you have to select the output of the HK?

Hey Wintermute Thanks again for always being there,
ok lets forget mp3 for a moment. but when I play Dolby digital, philips (MT1389) is suppose to pass it on unedited digital signals to HK. But its tempering with this DD (Dolby Digital). but where as DTS is just not supported. so I guess it is send to output unedited. Also one thing that strikes my mind is that can the DD decoder used in HK posing that problem?

Ok so regardless of which mode you choose, the HK is doing the output? How does it sound if you don't use the HK and play the Phillips direct to the amp on the stuff that it can do (two channel obviously)?
Have you checked the settings on the Phillips for the digital output? from memory my marantz can output in multiple different formats... (just checked and it can do doby digital or dolby digital -> PCM) I have no idea what the difference is because I only ever use it in stereo Also the PCM output has 96Khz output and 96 -> 48Khz downsampling as options. Not sure if any of this will help DD and DTS are a foreign concept for me!Tony. |

Tectonically yes, It does. But not sure if phillips processes the signal. Because low presence of mid is typical characteristic of Phillips ( even when I play from its analog output). I have unselected all the processing options. I am looking for a Datasheet of MT1389, Why is it not available on net ?

If you pass Dolby Digital to the receiver, the DD light on receiver should light up. DD also has several levels of "compression" that can be selected on the receiver - see manual about that, you might be on the highest one.
Also you didn't say how many speakers you have. The "sounds unclear" statement makes me think that you don't have a center channel speaker... |
