JRiver/I2S/TDA1541

Just for the nostalgia , and because it was possible I connected a teradac 24/96 USB-spdif up to the I2S inputs of an old 1541 dac I had in my junk pile, using the I2S connector on Teradak of course.
Worked first time, and has that "nice" 1541 sound, a bit dated ,but better than the spdif input.
The interesting thing is when I play a DAD 24/96 through JRiver the 1541 passes it ok. The JRiver says it is outputing 96k, but all my other dacs will only output up to their limit , which for the 1541 is 16bit/44.1Khz.
It doesn't sound like 24bit/96k , can the 1541 downsample?

The TDA1541 cannot down-sample or do any manipulation. It can operate up to 384KHz sample rate and it will load and convert the 16 most significant bits of an I2S bitstream that has a wordlength exceeding 16 Bit.

So you can (for example) feed the TDA1541 directly a 192KHz/24Bit datastream and you get 192KHz sample rate, but only 16 Bit...
