Hi all.
I have built a DAC using a dir9001 decoder and a TDA 1543A 16-bit DAC IC to convert the audio from my TV to analog for my old stereo system. Unfortunately, it can only convert 2 channel digital, not 5.1. I am gettin my TV via OTA, and the only audio output on the TV is TOSLINK, the reason for my project. Sadly, I can not change the audio output format on my TV from 5.1 to 2 channel PCM (dumb, right!?) so my DAC doesnt work. It works for my CD player, and my DVD player when I choose stereo output, so I know it's not my DAC. My main question, is if anybody knows of a product to convert 5.1 to 2 channel PCM for me to use between my TV and my DIY DAC... I've read alot of places that dolby has a lot of licensing on the tech, so it may be near impossible to get a chip for me to build a DIY....any inputs or ideas? Again, unfortunately, my TV will ONLY output 5.1 when gettin OTA signals. I can hook my DVD player through the TV, pull the audio out from the TV, and my DAC works because I am able to choose stereo on the DVD player. I am quite sad right now. Any help would be awesome. I am thinking that it should be possible to hook up an external tuner. There should be models that have a regular stereo analogue output besides the ac3/digital crap digital out. Did not research this but that would be my starting point.

I see now you wanted digital out, in that case I would put a computer in between and use the sound cards outputs set to 2channel mode.

There where HD tunners that had this conversion included in options... But wheren't the cheap SD, "rebate" ones.
I would look into an used digital receiver in a thrift store/cash converters/pawn store. That DAC that you have (with TDA1543) is not such a great DAC to begin with... Last edited by SoNic_real_one; 26th May 2011 at 01:15 PM. |

Hey, does anybody have any experience with this DAC IC? The WM8746?
DACs | WM8746 | Wolfson Microelectronics IT says it is a 6-channel DAC, and I was thinking maybe I could use this. My TV manual says it puts out 5.1CH audio via TOSLINK, not specifying that it is Dolby. Since it is not Dolby, I don't have to find some ridiculously expensive IC to handle Dolby. Any feedback would be great. Ken |
