Hi all!
This is my first time posting on this site, but up til now, it has been a wonderful tool in my projects! Right now, I am building a dir9001/TDA1543 DAC, with the main goal being to run it off the television, since it only has toslink output for audio, but I don't want to buy a new receiver with digital inputs. I have studied the manuals for the dir9001 and tda1543 in length, and have built it on a prototype board. When I hook it up to the tv, which is a samsung LN40B500P3FXZA, all I get is what I can best describe as high frequency noise, nearly synchronized with the LR CLK signal. When I hook it up to the toslink output of my CD player (RCA RP8078), it works great! My question: Is it possible that the two components are putting out very different forms of digital format, the TV being in an unuseable format for me? Ive tried googling what binary outputs they each use, but have come up empty handed. The dir9001 is able to lock on the PLL on the TV's signal, and puts out: Bit CLK: 3.2 MHz LR CLK: 48.1 kHz System CLK: 6.2 MHz The CD player outputs: Bit CLK: 2.850 MHz LR CLK: 44.1 kHz System CLK: 5.7 MHz The manual for the DIR9001 says it can use those specs, as well as the TDA1543. Any help? THANKS!! Ken |

I think you have to go to your tv's menu and select toslink audio output or outputs.

Is the TV outputting some special format such as Dolby or surround-sound? You should be able to set it to normal PCM stereo, but this might not be the default setting.

@singa, In the manual it says anytime there is audio, it is outputting data via the toslink, as evidenced by the ability of my DAC to lock on to it, so I don;t think that's it, but good thinking.
@DF96, I was wondering something similar as well, maybe it is encoding a 5.1 audio, which my chip isn't made to handle. I'll check in the settings, and see if I can find something dealing with surround sound. I hope that is all it is! haha |

Also, @DF96, PCM is still a form of S/PDIF, right? Do you know?

That's how it works on my set- the digital output is selectable via menus for several different formats. Choose the wrong one and all you get is noise. Unfortunately, the setting for this was well-hidden in a nonobvious place in the menu, so I spent at least an hour fiddling with it the first time.

That question is like asking if "a passanger is still a form of car".
S/PDIF is a transport medium (harware interface). PCM is an audio encoding format (composed of digital bits). That bit format (software) can be transmitted/transported over a S/PDIF physical (hardware) connection, but is not the connection... |

Sonic, didn't mean to upset you. I'm still rather new to the whole digital world. I appreciate you clarifying that hardware vs. software dilemma in my head!
I've talked with a few other people, and the common consensus seems to be that it is putting out a 5.1 signal when i need only stereo. When I get home tonight I will go through the menu on my TV as carefully as I possibly can and see if I can change this.Ken |

Did I came out like "upset"? My appologies, just wanted to explain you something...
And yes, in USA, the "over the air" TV channles are encoded DolbyDigital, even if they are stereo (to minimize the bandwidth). On cable, the cable boxes/receivers (not the TV) will have a setting to output the signal Dolby Digital or PCM stereo. Personally I don't have a setting in the TV to "convert" DD to uncompressed PCM... but my TV is a Polaroid one, and I live in country with ATSC system (on air) and QAM (on cable). Your situation might be different, didn't say if you have cable or antenna, and what country are you in (your Samsung model is sold in US at Best Buy so...?).
