Its a chip,

have you tried a google search for "SPDIF to USB" etc.... I'm sure there must be something.

Good luck

I'm sure it will work as outlined in the data sheet applications... if that covers what you want it to do.
I was just trying to point you toward possible ideas etc.

Something like a cheap Mini Disc recorder has SPDIF in, usually optical but some have optical and electrical, and of course analogue out. Would anything like that do ? The analogue out could be fed to a USB convertor/soundcard etc.

Get what !
Minidisc ? The chip ?, USB convertor.

Minidisc is pretty much an outdated if brilliant and versatile format so probably Ebay for a recorder although some Sony portables I think still appear as new stock/models.

I use Minidisc and as far as I know they all have at least an optical input, and some both optical and electrical. Mine is the Sony MDS-JE480.
If your Xbox outputs a standard SPDIF data audio stream then the Minidisc is simply used as a DAC to output L and R audio from it. You press record on the front (doesn't need a disc in) and you get the decoded L and R audio.

The chip would have to come from a component supplier but you just asking that suggests you don't realise the work involved... you would have to build it all yourself, make the PCB's and obtain all the other parts too... and on the DIY scale it's a major project due to being surface mount technology.
