Default Newbie alert!!

I'm new to CD builds, hacks and the like. I have a million questions. I will limit it to a few for starters. Question 1: I have an old Onkyo DX-2700 CD unit with a coax digital out. Is it worth the time and effort to build a DAC to run it into, or do I want to come off the existing D/A chips (Burr-Brown) into a homebrew tube line level amp? Question 2: Is the transport in this thing worth building a good transport around? Question 3: Can I modify this unit to sound much better without going the DAC or the improved line level amp? Thanks...

Hi,
Question 1- Yes you could ,there are various dac boards on offer, bitstream
or multibit.

You could also just add a tube buffer after the opamp output.See Mr.Lampizator website with plenty of examples.

Question 2- Building a transport from scratch is difficult unless if you think
getting a Philips CD PRO transport and associated electronics like
display control and remote plus power supply does not intimidate you.A better option will be a second hand player that sports a cd pro but I don't know if the laser will last.Personally I think a standard transport in a decent player will do.BTW cd pro are offered in high end players whether it is better
is debatable but a solid alluminium base has it's merits.

Question 3- Most certainly, refer to Lampizator for ideas. Good luck.
