Default mp3 input to reciever poor sound quality

Folks,
I have a Sansa Fuze mp3 player hooked into the phono input on my Onkyo TX8555 receiver, and my sound quality is lousy. I dont understand why these newer receivers dont have inputs to accomodate such digital sound sources to give better sound quality. Does anyone out there know how I can improve the sound quality with this set-up? Thanks

That's the reason why it's lousy.
You need to patch into a aux, tuner, tape input on your receiver. Or the VCR audio inputs. Anything but the phono in.
The rest of the why is your homework.

You need to make sure the mp3 player is turned well up.

I had noise problems with my setup and turned out to be the power supply.
I had to change the earthing arrangement around to get the rid of noise and hum.
