Default Philips CD960 CDM1 does not read last tracks a cd's

Hi,

My Philips CD960 with a CDM1 laser unit has problems reading the last +/- quarter of cd's. Playing to the end gets further than skipping tracks to the end.

Anyone any idea what could be the cause?

Thanks a lot,
Vincent

Does the mechanism track freely across the whole range ?

The 5 blue philips caps on the CDM pcb will be tired now. They are known to cause reading issues in general although they normally effect all not just the last 1/4.

You could also check the motor spindle height adjuster, poss wants to be a tiny fraction wound in after this time, that has caused tracking problems for me in the past.

As Andy says, check the swing arm can move freely across the whole disc before you start pulling to many parts out!

Thanks for the reply's.

I put the player in service position 0.
Using the >> and << buttons, the arm swings without any problem from most inner to most outer position.

I do not exactly understand where to find the 5 caps you mentione.
Picture attached. Could you point it out?

I'll now go searching for the motor spindle height adjuster

looks like 4 of the 5 have been replaced already. Originally, they would have all been like the single light blue radial. I think they are philips branded 33uF? The 4 darker colour upright caps would have replaced the light blue type.

The spindle height adjuster is torx head by the "G" sticker. Make sure you mark the screw so you can set it back to the original position. I would start by winding it in about 8th of a turn. The screw is nylon and may have worn over time allowing the spindle height to have dropped slightly.
