I have managed to aquire a Teac CD316E transport from an old armoured laptop (along with some other goodies). The transport has a single IDE ribbon connection and a 3 pin connector (power?). It seems to be a fairly robust bit of kit, and may have potential. Any ideas if it worth making into a dedicated transport, or should I just skip it?
Regards, Chris. |

Hi, A laptop cd rom is too flimsy to be a stable transport.Better to use a full
size standard cd rom or dvd provided you have a controller pcb to go with it. singa |

It is not a standard drawer loading CD drive; It is actually a top loading mech. The transport is from an armoured laptop with a substantial aluminium sub platter, which is secured to a pressed steel plate using anti-vibration mountings. The controller PCB is mounted under the sub-platter. The rotor appears to be milled from a piece of brass or similar alloy.
It would take a fair bit of fettling make a suitable enclosure, but I think it could be done. It's just the control side of things I need help with. |
