Default Philips CD104 lost all sound! need some help.

i pulled an old magnavox cd player down from the attic last night, it was my dad's first cd player, he bought it not long before i was born. sometime in the 90's it had a problem and has been sitting in the basement/attic since. after searching for a while i found out that it is the same thing as a cd104! so today i tore into it, one of the boards on the front panel was cracked, so i soldered jumper wires to fix the broken traces, i also soldered wire through the ground holes on the main boards. plugged it in and it worked!

then the left channel went out and after a couple resets it came back again and then went out again. i thought that it may be one of the relays on the lower board, so i took them out and soldered wires in their place as shown in the 6th picture from the bottom on this page. Philips CD104

plugged it in and hit play, everything seemed ok but there was no sound at all... so i put the relays back in and still nothing, switched the two relays thinking one may be bad, still nothing... what could i have broken?

right now the relay towards the back of the player has 5 volts on the coil and is closed like it should be and the one closer to the front has 0 volts on the coil and is open.

Thanks, Kyle.

well i looked over all of the cards really well and didnt find anything wrong, put it all back together and still nothing. i let it sit for about an hour or so and when i came back to it i tried it again just for fun and it worked! there is still no sound from the left channel, but the right is working! i wonder if one of the chips got zapped by some esd at one time.

i want to do the NOS upgrade, but i'd like to get the player working the way it should first.

I think you are correct in thinking the problem is in the muting circuit are.

Are you sure you have not shorted the signal to ground ?

Found the problem! The new rca jack that I installed went bad, not sure how, it was fine yesterday when I installed it, now there is no continuity. Too bad, they are pretty nice kimber kable connectors. I hooked some jumpers up to left output and its working just fine again! I'm still not sure why the right channel decided to stop working for a while tho, whatever.

Thanks for the help Andy, I was looking for grounds when I decided to check the rca. btw, do you have the manual/schematics for this player?

Thanks, Kyle.

I just started having another problem with my player the other day, when i turned it on and pushed play i got an error. took the covers off and found that when i turned the power on the cd started spinning. i hit eject and it was still spinning when the tray came out. i re connected all of the connectors inside and powered it up again and all was good again, at least for a while. the problem has come back and now it wont go away. i checked the boards and i dont see any loose solders or anything.

any ideas why it might be doing this?

Thanks, Kyle.
