I recently got a cd960 to use it as CD transport, so sans DAC etc.
The poor thing was abused by a modding attempt by Siltech, so no longer stock. Now it appears the digital out it came with was decommisioned or is no longer working, is the digital out on the cd960 in the SPdif or is it another format ...? Does anyone happen to know where on the circuit board I should look to pick up the digital signal in order to lead it to the output > DAC Have the service manual, yet haven't been able to find anything.... |

Look for the SAA7220 chip, the digital out is on the DOM pin.

Thanks for the response, there is a slight snag...CD960 uses the SAA7210, which has a Digital Out pin yet not in the SP/dif format I need (as far as I know...).
The CD960 has a digital out option, but I'm not clear on what format it uses, and if it uses SPdif where that signal is created. (also: the panel with the optical output circuit was removed in the 'modding' process once upon a time) Last edited by marcelnl; 14th February 2011 at 02:24 PM. |

There should also be a SAA 7220, Q503.
This provided the oversampling. Unless it has been removed in the previous modding ??? The optical output board only provides buffering of the signal and the optical coupler. .

so far; no sound....the DAC is not locking.....will try with a coupling cap to see whether the DC offset is messing things up.
SAA7220 does not use the spdif format but I2S afaik....so this probably never will work..... Last edited by marcelnl; 15th February 2011 at 06:02 PM. Reason: checked saa7220 spec sheet |

Similar problem on another thread ....
Quote:
The SAA7220 outputs I2S for the DACs and SPDIF for digital output. Do you have any audio output from the DACs? Andy .

I'll try that one, saw a resistor network in the spec sheet but did not find any ref to SPDIf on a second check...
will give it a try! So "biphasic mark code' is SPDIF.....never too old to learn I guess... As the dac was not locking I expected to hear no sound at all, so I did not even try to switch the amp on. story to be continued, thanks for the help !! I should have said "internal DACs".
Are they still there or were they removed ? Andy .

the internal DAC is still there, listened to the thing once but was too shocked by the poor performance....will check in a sec.
BTW: The saa7220 spec sheet shows a .1 uF coupling cap in line and a resistor network of 319Ohm connected to a 75ohm and a 91 ohm in parallel together connected to the ground plane. will try both, first need to find me some resistors of values close enough..... |
