Analog aside....
I've been using NiMh batteries in my dacs for many years thinking (not knowing) that it would be as good as it gets it terms of linear esr and low noise. So finally some of you guys got to me and I decided to test the tl431 shunt regulators, hoping to confirm I was doing the right thing. So I switched the individual NiMh batteries in all digital supplies for the shunt regulators using a 20 volt source (analog is still on the NiMH batteries) Oh boy was I in for a surprise....all else being equal using the shunt regulators presented a smoother, more solid and better defined sound stage. Now I kind of feel like smock having listening on battery noise for so long....or part of my ego hoping maybe the NiMh are not full of high freq noise and something else is going on, hence my query. |
