clock, master/slave no clock?

I'm getting up the courage to do Peter Daniels mods to the JVC boombox.
I do have a question about the crystal clock.

If I've read these posts properly (probably not), some advocate the crystal clock in the transport, some have a master clock in the transport and a slave clock in the D/A (?) some have only a clock in the D/A, and some don't use a clock?
I'd like to also make a D/A (lampized gigawork board)
