>This way we can use up all the old Ram Sticks and get the Reader to fill a local buffer (say 10 second read ahead) asyncronously with data, including multiple reads on errors.<

I know some designers who have done precisely this (including the multiple read technique), and their subjective assessment was that the biggest sonic benefits occur when the drive is powered off completely. Their conclusion was that the RAM buffer should be large enough to contain a complete song (and preferably the entire CD).

It's a good idea... but copying the entire CD into RAM before listening to it is probably something that could get annoying before long...

Reading a CD in 1X/2X/4X speed should be fairly quiet...

Well, once we get 1024 speed CD Drives that should only a few seconds to load... For now, while I appreciate the issues, I suspect a sufficiently seperate supply will go much of the way.

In most ways, binary data is binary data. as long as all circuiuts are seperate, coomon and differntial mode whatever clocks out the data from the buffer should dominate. Of course, shared supplies are BAD NEWS.

This is a interesting project!
I sow few time ago all this corean pages but I don't understand these language
In this case I'm very motivated to perform something here and I hope will make a working project!

Question:
- The final quality of the drive is not depending on the global quality of the CD-ROM drive?
- Who can we make a distinction between a good and a by drive?
It is better to use the digital out from the drive or the data flow from the ATA/IDE interface ?

Q: what about all these new copy protection systems that wont let you play a audio cd in a cdrom?
The TOC or whatever it is is messed up, making the cdrom go que about the cd?

you can probably solve it by making new firmware for the cdrom but that might be some troubles involved in that

sorry, dont want to shoot down the projekt, it is very interesting , I have been thinking about it myself.

I'm also very interested in doing something similar (building a transport for use with a separate DAC). I'm fairly skilled in programming and very skilled in hardware design, so I would gladly help where I can.

Firstly I think we should all decide what controller/processor and language etc we want to use. What we need to know for this decision is of course what features we would like to add and how wide the bus to and from the CDROM needs to be.

So far I have gathered that we want:
- remote control
- about 5 buttons
- interface to a computer (?) (RS232? USB?)

Does anyone know how wide the bus should be? I'm guessing 16bits, but haven't had time to read up on the subject.

I think if we could get this information together we can start hardcore teamwork and produce a really good transport. Please post any relevant info and controller etc suggestions.

DJ

An IEEE interface would be a great thing
I don’t think that a Computer interface is absolutory necessary, SPDIF and an AES/EBU are more interesting to connect the drive to DAC.
