cd player skips

I got this sony cd player, takes 200 cd's I have the original remote, it sounds a bit bland, but there is a ton of room inside for me to mod the output with tube. However no amount of cleaning etc keeps it from randomly skipping tracks, and it doesn't do it on 1 or 2 or ome brew or just some CD's, like my yamaha's do. Its on all of em.
Now it is a vertical carousel, all the rest I have ever has are horizontal. Is there a difference and is the vertical prone to slippage of the disk. can there be some kind of home brew thing to make it more grippy instead of that felt like hat on the motor to make it engage better ? Thanks please let me know.
