Default Rotel RCD-951 CD player skipping

Hello,

I have a Rotel RCD-951 that skips and the shop informed me it needed a new pickup assembly which includes replacing the spindle motor. Unfortunately, the spindle motor was totally impossible to find a replacement for. Does anyone know if the later model Rotel's have a similar pickup assembly or where I might be able to find such a part?

Alternately, I am looking to buy a used Rotel 975-RCD from a single owner in excellent condition or Rotel 991-RCD with an unknown background but which has "been tested and functions". Any words of experience or wisdom on the matter would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks in advance,

-llyfre

Doesn't the 951 use the KSS213C, they are everywhere, and cheap.

The 991 is a great player, as is the 971. The 975 is just OK. I have owned all of them.

If you are capable of taking a toaster apart and putting it back together you can replace the pickup assy in any Sony transport. AFAIK, they all use Sony KSS213C

Thanks Bill,

So the KSS-213C is the assembly & spindle motor I'm in need of?....

I'm handy with tools, though have never soldered, do you think this is a good place for me to get my feet wet?

I love my 951, do you think it's worth going into and trying to switch out the KSS-213?

Thanks for your help!

Sure it's worth it. Getting the tray out is the hardest part, you have to push 2 little plastic springs out of the way for removal. If you cant find them I can send you a little dwg.
Actually, the entire assy is KSM, KSS is just the laser head. You can get them on Ebay, from MCM, and B&D among others. The ribbon cable just pulls out of the connector, and the suspension springs are different front to back so pay attention when you disassemble it. There is a solder blob on the new laser head that has to be removed but that's all of the soldering. Be careful not to damage the cd platform on the new spindle motor, don't put any strain on it when you have it upside down on the bench.

Audiolab of GA has one in stock. It is KSM213CCM, that is the entire mech.

Thanks again Bill, and for the Audiolab of GA tip --a good resource and the part is on the way. Unfortunately I already ordered the KSS from another company (Electronix Corporation) and they mailed it out as soon as I placed the order so I could neither change or cancel the order. It was inexpensive so no problem there, but I wonder if I will need it in conjunction with the KSM or if the KSM actually includes the KSS?

Regardless, I'll get busy as soon as it all arrives, looking thoroughly for the plastic springs for the tray, being mindful of the front and rear suspension springs & especially careful with the CD platform. I'll get back with you in case I need further directions with the tray, thanks for the offer of help.

One last thing --do I need to desolder the blob on the new laser following traditional desoldering steps or is it just a little something holding it in place that can be scraped off?
