Default Sony CDP-C910

Hi Folks,

I have inherited a Sony CDP-C910 cd player (sold in 1990/1991) and would love to use it. From what I read in sonys product lineup from the time it was the model just below the ES series. However am having problems with playback, and was hoping to have some guidance on what the problem might be.

The problem may be two different things, Ill explain:

1) After a few seconds of playback the cd player will go (skip) back to the begging of the first track. On occasion after a minute or two will skip to the next track and play.

2) It will then play normally for about 10-15 minutes or so then there will be no output. I can hear the cd spinning and the counter is ticking away like it should but no output. I can change discs / skip tracks and it appears to be physically playing the cd but nada is going to the amp.

I have even tried to try the variable output (instead of the line level) and have the same result.

Looking inside it is in immaculate shape (no dust, no visible wear on the gears).

The only way to get any output is to turn it off and leave it off for about 30 mins or so. Otherwise with a quick reboot there is still no output.

Could it be a simple alignment issue? or yet (another) unit that requires a new optical block?

I appreciate any help on this.

I wouldn't do any electrical adjustments at this time. Sony has lots of issues with lubricants that thicken up and turn to mud. What you're describing could be sluggish response of the sled servo. Disassembling/cleaning/re-lubricating may be beyond your comfort level - or not.

I think a very careful examination will likely confirm the lube issue. Personally I don't use Sony lubes because it just fails again. I prefer synthetics from Nye - but they're pricey.
