Default Sony x707ES Laser Bad

I have a Sony X707es that has served well for many years. Now it won't play CDs. I have done some research and it appears the laser (KSS-272A) is gone. Since this is a relatively old CD player the laser assy doesn't seem to be available. Has anyone tried to modify an available laser assy to work? Any ideas? I really don't want to use this for a boat anchor.

Exclamation KSS 272a or KSS271a for SONY CDP x707es

HI
just my five cents to help you if you still need it

First of all read this link about "dead laser units" Laserology

This helped mine Sony CDP X777ES and after i cleaned the laser as in that link
till this day it has not skipped or stopped playing.

second thought is that some KSS-xxx laser units are interchangeable meaning for example KSS 151A is the same as KSS271A (CDP X77ES) it may (but not always) have a longer or shorter ribbon wiring, this I found out by buying both and trying to fit it to my CDP X777ES (KSS280A)but they did not fit but if you can get the whole unit with the sled mechanism then it would probably fit in place with old unit.I tried to do this before reading and cleaning the laser unit as in that link.
Later I found out by comparing both KSS280a with KSS240a that again it is the same as such but have different wiring to the servo module.the voltage and working conditions are the same just need to change the wiring. It is easer to re-solder the connection than trying to take out the laser diode from one and putting it to the other like someone on this forum did. I tried to buy just the laser diode it self but no luck. There are some retailers in Chine but they will not sell less than a hundred and that becomes too expensive for me.

Hope this info comes in handy to any one.

Question Laser diodes for KSSxxx

Hi
I just read the link that artegagt posted and seeing that a KSS213 works with a CDP X555ES where the original was KSS240 that gives a straight assumption that the diode it self is the same as in KSS240 so why not change the diode assembly (head) not just the diode and attach it to the KSS240 sled ???

I will have to investigate this closer. Maybe some hope in this method there is as YODA would say.
enjoy the music
Greg

Thanks for the quick replies atcgreg & artegagt!! I'll give the checklist a try. If that doesn't do it, then I'll look around for similar laser assemblies with the sled. I've done some dac, amp and speaker construction, but trouble-shooting cd transports maybe outside my abilities. Thanks again for the help.

Bob

ps Iwish I read Polish!

Default Sony x707ES - feet !

Hi,

It is good to hear that there is still active discussions going on some of the older gear !!

I recently picked up a fairly nice 707ES and it has some APL mods completed on it. Unfortunately, it was missing the feet. I am trying to locate a set of (4) feet for mine. Since it was mod'd, I have started investigating some after-market feet as well, but I figured it would be worth a bit of time looking for some OEM feet.

Any help or thoughts are truly appreciated.....

Default feet for HiFi gear

Hi
the only idea comes to my mind is to buy ready made absorbing feet made by Acousti Products. Google it and you'll find a lot to choose.

I remember that there was a producer of "feet" replaceing cheap plastic OEM into hi-tech ones that would fit without any problem but I forgot the name sorry.

It is a shame you bought (CDP X707ES)yours without them because at that time it was and still is very sophisticated product -ceramic layer with a spike inside!!
No present manufacture of Hi-end gear does it.

I also heard that PUMICE is great for isolating and absorbing. It costs nothing and can easly be cut to suit as feet.
I tried it and belive it or not , it is the cheapest way and works as good as mega bucks hitech stuff.

enjoy the music

Greg

I attached two photos of the pumice that i tried. Really works.
The music sounds "free" and the bass is all of a sudden less "muddy"
Of course that's my own subjective judgement.

Hifi stuff
Sony CDP X777ES ,TA-E80ES , AA MAA705 monoblocks.
