It is often considered Toslink is a less than desirable way to feed the digital signal into the DAC but is there a room to improve this? How good a Toslink input can get?
If you ask me, TOSLink is fine as long as the bits arrive. Usually it is the only way to get data out of a portable CD or MiniDisc player. Use the receivers from Sharp Microelectronics and don't worry about it.
I´ve compared toshlink to a cheap digital cable (between Marantz CD10 and Perpetual P3-A) and prefered the toshlink (1m).
Next I´ll lend me a more expensive digital cable and see if anything changes (hopefully not )
