Hi,
I have two service manuals, Nakamichi OMS-5 and Toshiba XR-Z70. Laser for the Nak is "HLPL030020", for the Tosh it is "OHP-32" But comparing the drawings of the manuals, both lasers look to me like twins. Can it be the same model? BTW, in the Manual of the Nak, a name of the laser pickup is not even stated, you´ll have to open it to check... All the best, Salar |

Toshiba "OHP-32" ?
I haven't heard about this type until this day. mean you that one from post #43 about KSS-122A and KSS-123A - Are they Interchabgeable? ?? The "HLPL030020" (NEC) is listed also by compact disc player KYOCERA DA-910 there are some infos about NEC Laser by Nakamichi Ersatzlaser für Nakamichi OMS-5, Elektronik (Stereo&Surround) - HIFI-FORUM What mean "comparing the drawings of the manuals" ?? The exploded view for laser unit or the schematic diagram? Last edited by tiefbassuebertr; 12th March 2010 at 06:57 PM. |

Sorry, it is OPH-32.
The Kxocera DA-910 is almost the same as the Nakamichi OMS-5 and 7, ecxept the display and it´s drivers, which seems to be LED and not VFL. In the service manuals, I mean the exploded views and disassembly/mechanical setup drawings. Same location screws and pins, housing looks the same, etc. But the rest of mechanics is different, I had no time yet, to check the schematic diagrams for similarities in APC or servos... |

The Toshiba laser is extremely similar in appearance to the NEC, but I can confirm from experience that they are NOT interchangeable.

The laser diode itself could be e. g. a P-SUB or N-SUB type in the same TO outline. Thus are also different APC circuits in use. This is also true by the integrated monitor diode on the same chip. If you have failured compact disc player with one of this here mentioned laser head, it isn't expect, that the laser head is the reason therefore (in opposite to the KSS series from SONY). The players I specifically remember with that Toshiba head are the Yamaha CD-1(still one of the best looking players ever) and the Denon DCD1800(I think), whereas the players with the NEC are, of course, the Nakamichi OMS-5/7 and Kyocera 910/810(and 710?). Kyocera reportedly made the rest of that transport for Nak, although Nak did their own boards for it, as well as a discrete output module that you could disassemble, whereas Kyocera strangely tar-potted their output modules, making them unserviceable.
