I built jwb's DAC:
Cheap 24/96 DAC, Revision B. I don't have a stand-alone CD player with digital output, so I'm trying to figure out how to connect my computer to the DAC. I haven't even tested the DAC yet since I don't want to damage it with the wrong input signal. I have an SBLive! with digital output, but from what I found on the net that's a 0V to 5V peak-to-peak signal, whereas I assume jwb's DAC uses the standard -0.5V to 0.5V coax input. The other source of a digital signal is the DVD drive's digital output, which is EBU-IEC958 according to the manual. Is there any simple way to convert these signals to what the DAC can take? I was looking at this diagram: http://sound.westhost.com/p85-f6.gif and I wonder if it the circuit might still work without the inverters, or if there's a way to duplicate their function with discrete transistors, since I don't have any inverters. For example this simple inverter: http://www.play-hookey.com/digital/e...verter_sch.gif would it be fast enough for this application? Edit: since there's a transformer at the DAC's input, shouldn't just the voltage divider be sufficient? |
