thanks molly...yeah i was not getting any notifications of replys. As stated previously..i have ordered the correct pickup and will try to install near the end of the month.Yes i have ordered the correct pickup that was on the pickup itself. I was told it may be as much as $100 but upon searching , i found one for way less....$7.95 @electronix. They must have really dropped in price lately.

Well....finally got the new laser kss-213d from electronix....got my buddy to install it...still not working ....but.....he seen the laser light up briefly and quickly realized that the ribbon that plugs into the laser is in fact broken somewhere on the ribbon itself......how common and easy are these ribbons to find and replace? The ribbon is 2 1/2 inches long....11/16 inches wide with 16 contacts. There is no plugs on the ends..just bare silver contacts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you sure it's broken ? The laser lights (that you can see) only during "Focus search" which is when the lens bobs up and down while trying to find focus. With a disc in place you can't see it of course.

You can usually see damage to the flexiprint. If you do need one it's proably going to have to come from Sony. Some suppliers do have them but not in specific lengths etc.

Take the foil out and examine carefully and measure on ohms too.

Im just passing info on here from what my buddy says. He is pretty sure thats what it is. So what you are saying is that all of these ribbons are different hey mooly? I would have thought that they would all be similar...computers etc. He has already changed the laser with out any results so he started to fiddle with moving things and finds that every time he moves the ribbon things start to work. Thanks for this.I will keep you updated.

All different and model specific usually. Many have unique folds and angles in them too.
If you can move things and it works then it's pretty conclusive it's a break or dry joint somewhere.
Can you turn the foil around end to end and see if the fault changes.

listening to her as I type this....to Rick Darringer....."IT WAS A TOTAL COSMIC NEED FOR A TEENAGE LOVE AFFAIR....BAA..NAAA...NAAA...NAAAA".
We cut off a 1/2" of the ribbon and bingo. I do think i should order the correct ribbon and replace it as the player/laser is very accessable from the underneath as now that we have cut it, she may or may not be too short. I thank all who contributed to this thread. How common is there a brake in the ribbon?
I guess my next question is ....how good of a stereo is this Sony...model HCD-D590...or did i just fix a lemon...hehe. For as much as i know about quality sound eh (Can.)....it sounds pretty damn good.
"And now........Kenny Sheilds and Streetheart........."MEANWHILE.....BACK IN PARIS.......BAAA...DA....DA....DAA............ACTI ON...ACTION....READ ALL ABOUT IT'..........and now..TODD RUNDGREN......................

Yeah..mooly..i should state that it also could have been a problem of poor connection at the very end of the tape/ribbon as well as we never really found a break. We just came to the realization that every time we wiggled the ribbon..she woke up. Could very well have been a poor connection at the end. I am waiting for electronix to tell me what the ribbon is worth and will more than likely order it.
So any idea how good a unit she is....anyone?
