I would suggest the next step up from the device Geek pointed out.....
Mini HD Media Player-USB HDD HOST-AVI MP3 DIVX DVD XVID - eBay (item 300389116167 end time Feb-19-10 20:01:03 PST) Not exactly a kit, but it's still relatively cheap, supports more file formats, and has video output for a display. It would be easy enough to put in a fancy chassis.
