In the web page of Philips, I found some "strange" spec numbers:
Philips - DVD player with USB 1080p HDMI DivX Ultra - DVP5990/F7 - DVD Players - Blu-ray and DVD - Sound and vision (hit the tab of 'specification'), and you'll see: D/A converter: 24 bit, 192 kHz .... Dynamic Range (1kHz) > 80 dB .... Frequency response 30-20000 Hz What's wrong within the box to have 80dB dynamic range and 30Hz LF limit? Is that normal for a 24bit DAC

Yes the signl to noise is low. This is from the analogue output stage. These units are usually designed to work with external decoders, so most of the designers dont worry too much about the analogue outputs. Are you just using it for stereo? If not then you will need a decoder or a reciever with a built in decoder. And why a DVD player in the age of Bluray. Blurays are getting cheap and offer more audio formats (including lossless multichannel (up to 12 tracks?)) vif you have the apropriate decoder.
