CD6002 Error.. Somebody let the smoke out!?!?

Hi all..

I have a 2008 Marantz CD6002 that just started acting weird.

When i switch it on from standby the led changes (good) but nothing comes up on the display. If i press eject or play it might say error or nothing (bad)
If i power it down at the wall and back on it works as normal until the next time it goes into standby and acts stupid again (bad)

So i took the lid off and had a look around. I can smell something burnt out but cant see anything swollen or burnt, may be hidden from plane view!?

I have had no recent or past problems with the player.
When it does work it works as normal and sounds as per normal.

Has anybody else had this happen before or have any advice??

The good news .........

As the cdp works when you switch on, 99% of the system works.
The fault is obviously in the standby part of the PSU.

Previously, I have found this fault to be caused by a bad capacitor. Look for swolen or burst tops on caps in the psu region.

It should be a simple repair.

I do have a diagram for the cdp but its at home in the UK and I'm on a ship off the Malaysia coast...!

Agree a cap is very likely, but it may have taken a resistor with it, gone high in value etc... hence the burn smell.

OK, so I pulled the unit apart and now have an empty box... YAY

I have looked at every cap and they ALL look fine, could they be blown without looking like it?

Should i try and find or does anybody have the service manual for the CD6002 they could send to me?

Can i power the PSU and check for something at the output that might give away the faulty component?

My electronics experience isn't great but ill give anything a go as i cant afford to have it repaired by others

Update regarding odd behavior before death.

Just before the unit stopped working all together the display would come on for a few secs then fade out over 5 sec and the unit would stop making noise or responding to and buttons

Would a dodgy part in the display PCB cause the rest of the unit to stop working?
Could the 'fade-out' be caused by dodgy PSU component?

I'm gonna have to take that electronics course at uni to fix this me thinks :P

Now it's out of the box, can you see / smell what was burning / hot?

A cap can leak from underneath or can swell on top. Look for slight bulging.

Sounds like a PSU problem to me.
Powering up and measuring would probably reveal the fault but you need to know what you are looking for in the first place, checking low vale resistors, output from regulators, any unusual B-E volt drops across transistors etc.
