Well,
I feel the need to start looking at my next project. I am exploring the possibilities of making a CD transport using a CD ROM drive as the heart of the system. How easy would this be? I know that I would need the basic controls (Play/Pause/Stop/Skip/Track up/down, some sort of display and either S/PDIF or Bitstream out. Are their any kits available anywhere? Chris. |

Try this link on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/CDROM-controller...d=p3286.c0.m14 This is an easy to use and functional product, and works fine with most, but not with all CD-ROM drives. The seller's pretty helpful and responsive and has a thread in the Vendor's Bazaar area: CDROM control KITs VFD version Note that getting a digital audio output requires intercepting the signal before the onboard DAC. There's some discussion of this on the thread. --Buckapound |

Most if not all - except slimline - cd roms have digital output. No problem to to get a two pin cable to run it straight to a rca jack.

"Note on HDR-2 (2 pin header) interface used in some PC products:
Many modern PC CD-ROM drives and some soundcards (SB32, AWE32, etc.) have a two pin digital output connector in the back of the drive and they sometimes call that interface S/PDIF. Unfortunately the electrical signal which comes from it is not exactly what is described in S/PDIF specifications. The data format is exactly the same, but the signal is TTL level (5Vpp) signal instead of the normal 1Vpp signal. The output level might be selected to make the interfacing to other digital electronics easy when signal is travelling inside the computer (the normal output driver system and input amplifiers can be avoided). The downnside of this is that you need to build some electronics to make the signal from the CD-ROM drive to match what normal S/PDIF equipments expect." http://www.epanorama.net/documents/audio/spdif.html |

I run the signal from various cdrom drives that I have built into a behringer src2496 and have not had any problems with overloading the inputs.

You might find a NEC Multispin 602 external CD rom drive on Ebay and then modify it.
