standalone cd burner

they are not identical,they differ in the TOC (table of contents) and i remember there was back then an utility that formated an usual cd-r on the computer to be seen as audio formatted cd on a dedicated stand alone cd-writer.
and i think (not 100% sure) that computer cd-writer ignores the audio-cd TOC of these cds and can be also written as DATA CDs on the PC
 
every single cd or dvd has a TOC
there it is displayed the media layer info,burn speeds,writing strategies,substrate info...
i don't know how you could modify a standalone cd-writer to e able to write on ordinary data cd-roms.
another/better option is - you should search for some utility that formats ordinary cd-r's TOC to fool the standalone writer as it was dealing with an audio-cd
