Has anyone fitted a new clock to the Alpha 5 plus ?
I've tried to read as much on it as I can but am unsure of what items to remove from the DAC board or where to get the power from and the ideal ground locations for power in and signal out. Of course I can remove the old crystal pretty simply but I've read that some caps need removing too. Which ones ? The clock will take from 10 - 25 volts and is easy enough to work on relative to attaching wires etc. I'm just nervous I guess - everything else I've done has been far easier than this and worked first time !! Looking at the other threads mine seems pathetic - sorry. Any help appreciated

If you have not already got the circuit, ask Arcam for a copy.
The components to remove will become more apparent then. Usually it is 2 caps and a resistor. Andy

Thanks Andy.
I'm not sure I'd understand it !! You still said what I sort of new already - 2 caps and a resistor. Which ones ? There are two caps very close to the original clock and feel sure it'll be them to come out. However, I also read that you connect the slots left by the caps and use this as ground. Does that mean connect all four slots ? I've changed op amps, caps, removed muting trannnys, done the NON OS but am still just following other peoples work which is fine until you have to go deeper into understanding electronics - which I don't really. I do enjoy it though and my player is getting a lot better I'll search the other threads and see if anyone has done it successfully. Hey, thanks for the reply Andy

Of the other 2 ends, one goes to the clock in and the other to the clock out ( of the chip) Your new clock 'in' should go to the clock in of the chip. Your new clock 'ground' could go to the common of the 2 caps( ie ground). This does depend on your power supply arrangements for the clock as you may set up a ground loop which is a bad thing. What clock are you using ?? Andy

Hi Andy
It's a Burson Clock. I fitted their OPA discrete op amps too Nice kit - sounds amazing compared to the Op amps I took out. Thanks for the explanation - think I may get it everntually. There appears to be 12 volts coming off the small ceramic caps on the DAC board - can I use these for power ? Regards Andy |

Andy Hi
I thought the ' red out ' wire of the new clock went into the dac board position where the old crystal was and the black went to ground - the combined capacitor grounds ? ' Of the other 2 ends, one goes to the clock in and the other to the clock out ( of the chip) ' I don't undertand this bit ' Your new clock 'in' should go to the clock in of the chip ' The chip being where the old clcok was ? Your new clock 'ground' could go to the common of the 2 caps Yep, understand. Sorry for this And |
