Hi, I would like to attempt a repair of my Discmagic 1. The sypmtoms are that it does not read a disc. The disc spins up to speed, and after a short while stops spinning and the display reads "disc". I have been advised it is probably the laser, although there was not a period when the unit behaved erratically, skipping and so on so I'm not sure. The only thing that would happen is that if the unit ever got switched off (whcih was infrequent) , it would fail to read any disc, but after it had been on a whule it would begin to work again. Now it works no more. I have tried cleaning the sensor to no avail. I have been rash and bought a cheap CD4 from Ebay - it will arrive with the next few days. I am assuming the CD mechanism can be simply transplanted as they are identical Sanyo units - is this supposition correct? Is there anything to watch out for? If they are not the same, and I simply use the CD4 as it is as a replacement transport by connecting the digital coaxial feed to my DACMagic 2 k II, will the end result sonically be the same?

Ok, so I swapped the CD menchamism over between the CD4 and DiscMagic 1 (they are the same, except the one in the DiscMagic 1 is grey and not black), and the fault remains. Any ideas what else I can try, or shall I forget the DiscMagic and make do with the CD4? Thanks, Tony.

O.K so you think it's not the laser. What you are going to have to work out is what associated circuitry is attached to the laser mechanism. It could be a dry joint or failure of a component.
You will need a schematic to check what goes with what (if you see what I mean) Audio Partnership might be able to supply you with a schematic. Alternatively use the CD4 as a transport. It is unlikely to sound vastly different, but only your ears can tell. |

Just found this on the DaCapo thread :-
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showt...36#post1792036 've been a happy user of a Discmagic with a Dacmagic s700 until recently (the Discmagic has stopped working*), so i might like to replace them with something new. (*the Discmagic has started clicking/rattling when trying to read a cd. The problem came on gradually -- at first it would read the disc for a while, then start rattling and skipping after it had been on a while, maybe something getting warmed up. Then i found that it only did it on track 1, and i could skip to track 2 and play the rest of the CD fine. But now it does it all the time, and won't play anything. Anyone have any ideas what's up?) Post #407 mjm666, three years ago I had a similar Diskmagic problem. When all hope is gone for the unit you might try this: I opened the case and physically moved the read head a few millimeters. This was probably a pain for some small plastic cogwheels. Anyway, once powered, the player re-centered (or re-whatever...) the head and my player started reading all CDs again. / BR Tomas F. |
