PS3 as CD player - actually not bad at all!

Hi folks!

Well this one took me by surprise. Have a couple of DACs in pieces so quickly rigged up my PS3 via its analogue outputs (using IXOS multi-av lead - nothing special) so I could still listen to music while I work... The PS3 is on a cheap thick wooden chopping board, and that board is on rubber isolation mounts.

And I have to say, it actually sounds surprisingly good - enough for me to put off the DAC projects and just listen to the music from start to finish. Very good detail, but not thrown out at you 'in your face' so to speak. Superb and expressive solid bass. Not cold or clinical, or 'rose tinted' sound either - sounds pretty neutral, but not boring. This is a stock unit too, running the latest firmware. I believe all 16-bit music is upsampled too? Anyway the DAC sounds pretty good whatever it is, that goes for the SACD playback too using Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On?' disc as a test.

I think this player has potential. Just interested to see if anyone else had had similar experiences with their PS3, or had done any mods? I'll have to try it with one of my DACs when finished as I think it would make a super transport, but quite honestly the DACs sound good already.

Goin to be using my ps3 hooked up to an external 500gig HDD to play wav files...ps3 sounds pretty good but i will be taking the digital out into a home brew external Dac soon
