Default Is this a good DAC?

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...TRK:MEFM:SI:IT

It uses CS8416 as digital receiver and CS4397 as DAC which perform 24/192 digital to analog translation .

Or is it you get what you pay for?

It's a pretty looking board. The cs4397 is an obsolete chip and has been replaced by the cs4398. I have not heard a cs4397, but it is supposed to very similar to the cs4398. Part of the decision comes down to wether or not you like the sound of the Cirrus Logic chip family. I personally find the sound too relaxed and lacking in dynamics. I personally like a DAC that is more detailed and involving.

These are just my impressions and take on the chip. I've heard nearly all the chips on the market, and this cs family is among my least favorite.

If you asked me to bet money on it's performance... It will sound better than most CD players and not as good as other dedicated DAC's.

Once you hear a decent AKM4396, AD1955, or BB1794A you'd never turn the cs439x DAC back on. Your mileage may vary.

For 30 Euro's it's a great deal, and you will have fun with it.
