Onkyo DX-C606 CDP fixed
Thanks to the information from this forum, I fixed my Onkyo CDP.
The CD changer was purchased back in 1995 (for $300+). It was playing fine and producing a very nice and warm sound. Out of the box, there has been a minor problem - a few CDs won't play. In the past few years, it started to give me problems like unable to detect a CD and is getting worse. I was checking here and there but didn't think about the spindle motor because the motor always spins. I have put the unit aside after multiple attempts to fix the problem (to no avail).
I am glad to find this forum about fixing CDP. Even there is no discussion on my exact model, I think all evidences point to the spindle motor. So, I had the motor out today and opened it up. There are some oxidation on the rotor's copper contacts. I used very fine sand paper to remove the oxidations there (learned this from working on my car's alternator, but this motor is just much smaller). I also used the same sand paper to remove the oxidation on the copper bushings. I also noticed there was absolutely no lubrication on the rotor axle. Since I have no sewing machine oil, I used synthetic 5w-20 motor oil. The oil seemed thicker compare to sewing oil but I gave it a try anyway. I also oiled the track/guide for the head.
Quickly putting everything back together, popped in a CD and hitted "play"- Wahlaa!!! The CDP comes back to life !!! It is now still playing while I'm typing this.
The problem with a few CDs not playing is still there. I believe this is probably an alignment issue. My workaround is to duplicate an audio CD from the computer and the dup always works.
I have absolutely no clue as to how to do alignment, especially without a service manual. There are quite a few trimmers around the head and the board. If anyone can point me to the right direction, please feel free to do so and I really appreciate that !
