What are the important factors to consider in deciding whether to bypass the CDP audio output section (via DAC to coupling caps to RCAs), versus upgrading the analog output with new opamps, caps, relays? I'm interested in the sound differences of the two approaches (such as less punch with the bypass) as well as other variables I haven't thought of, thus the question. I'm trying to work up mod plans for a Sony ce775, a Sony c2000es, and an Onix xc-99, all with voltage output DACs, so the bypass is feasible on all 3 units, and the Sonys certainly don't have impressive stock audio output sections. Any information will be useful and appreciated.
Thanks, Thom |

Hi Thom
If there is no extensive HF filtering done by the opamps and you are only driving short cables into high impedance preamp i would recommend bypassing. I have only done this once but suffered absolutely no ill effects (less dynamics or punch) and got an appreciable increase in detail and directness. |

Thanks. I'm leaning toward the bypass on all three players, the Sonys for certain.

bypass... don't forget to disconnect the analog IC's from the power supply rails as short to the power supply regs as possible, AND GROUND everything that can be grounded - do not leave PCB areas "floating" - tie them to PCB ground potential. The steps I mentioned above are as important and as beneficial as bypass on its own.

Thanks. I thought I would need to do so, but did not realize it could also be beneficial.
