Cleaning the lens with isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) on a cotton swab would be the first option.

Do not touch any of the adjustments!

It is not unlikely that the laser is weak or burn out. My DCD-1520 from 1989 will very soon be retired of this reason.

The DCD-815 is almost 10 years younger, slim chance the laser is already dying...
Parts are still available at a Denon distributor.
Laser unit is KSS213 and costs about €15.

Put in a CDR, if you have more problems with a fresh CDR than an ordinary CD you may have a weak laser. My laser started to go bad for approx. 7-8 years back (= 10 years old CDP).

I did a Google search and got a lot of hits. People from Sweden have bought from England for around 25 USD (if I remember correctly).

If I understood correcty, those people ship worldwide...

--> I still don't think your laser is dying, focus is just off, could be a dirty lens. (some lenses need to be cleaned on top AND bottom, but I don't know if the lens of a KSS213 can be removed)
